Enjoy a tail-wagging weekend this winter

One of the best things about visiting Newquay in the winter months is the freedom it gives you and your dog. With seasonal beach restrictions lifted, there are so many dog-friendly beaches to leave pawprints on – and with fewer visitors, even more space to bound around.

Of course, the beaches aren’t the only draw for visitors and their canine companions. With hotels and cafés proudly displaying dog-friendly signs, there’s never been a better time to treat your dog to a tail-wagging weekend away. Here’s Experience Newquay’s ‘5 to Try: Dog-Friendly’ list to give you a fresh dose of inspiration.

Flat white for you and a puppuccino for your furry friend? You’ll find that many of Newquay’s cafés aren’t just dog friendly, they’re dog lovers.

Highlights include the restaurant at Lusty Glaze, which offers water bowls, dog beds and a few tasty dog treats too, and The Garden Café, which welcomes dogs inside and out. Nestled in Trenance Gardens, The Garden Cafe offers a calm space, with puppuccino’s and doggie ice cream galore. It has even organised special ‘Dog’s Dinners’ days in the past.

Newquay offers a choice of luxurious escapes for humans, but many hotels also let your canine companions stay (sit and lie down) in comfort too.

The Headland Hotel provides blankets, treats, poo bags and a water bowl on arrival – plus, Fistral Beach is within sniffing distance. Tolcarne Beach Village is also very dog friendly, plus dogs are allowed on the beach here in the off-season. They have a number of designated dog-friendly rooms, and their welcome pack includes a bowl, towel and treats.

Wild walkies

With the South West Coast Path weaving around the entire coast of Newquay, there are so many routes for you to discover.

You could explore Newquay’s shoreline or ignite your sense of adventure by strolling across the little footbridge to Porth Island (Trevelgue Head). For their safety (and yours!) dogs must be kept on leads along the coastal paths, on Porth Island and near any cliffs.

With seven beaches that are dog friendly year-round, plus many more that allow dogs in the off-season, sandy paws are definitely the order of the day for four-legged visitors to Newquay.

They could stretch their legs on the golden sands at Watergate Bay or leap around in the tidal pools at Fistral Beach. Find out more about which beaches are dog friendly here.

While you’re on holiday, you might want to pause (or should that be paws?) somewhere lovely for a leisurely meal – and it’s handy being able to take your dog with you.

The Fort Inn is situated on the edge of Newquay town centre and enjoys stunning views along the coast. The Fort Inn offers a tempting menu to accompany its sea views, plus well-behaved dogs are welcome here too.
