Newquay BID and Newquay Police Secure Additional Funding to Support a Safer Night-Time Economy
Newquay BID, working in close partnership with Newquay Police, is pleased to announce that additional funding has been secured from the Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) to further support the town’s night-time economy.
This funding will enable additional policing on Friday and Saturday nights, with extra police officers deployed over several months. This increased presence will provide vital reassurance to businesses, residents, and visitors, helping to keep Newquay’s streets safe during the busiest periods.
In addition, Newquay BID has secured further funding to purchase six body-worn cameras, which will be made available to local businesses where there is a higher risk of harm, anti-social behaviour, or where intelligence gathering may assist police investigations. The use of body cameras will help provide clearer evidence, support prosecutions, and ultimately bring offenders to justice.
This initiative represents another strong example of the collaborative approach between Newquay BID and Newquay Police in making the town a safer place for everyone.
Inspector Steve Johnson, from Newquay Police Station, said:
“This funding allows us to provide additional targeted policing at key times, strengthening our visibility and ability to respond quickly. Being visible during these hours not only provides a deterrent to those intent on getting involved in alcohol related crime and disorder, but also provides reassurance to women and girls who have every right to move around the town safely. Working closely with Newquay BID has been instrumental in achieving this.”
Mark Warren, Newquay BID Manager, added:
“I’m extremely pleased to be working with Steve and the Newquay Police. We have a strong partnership focused on keeping Newquay safe. Alongside this new funding, we already deliver a range of initiatives including Shopwatch and Pubwatch radios, regular partnership meetings, and the Newquay Rangers, whose hours will be increasing to support the busy season and town events.
We also operate the best CCTV system in Cornwall, working closely with the police to gather intelligence and protect our community, visitors, and businesses.”
Newquay is also the first town in Cornwall to operate the Best Bar None scheme, supporting licensed premises to provide safe, well-managed environments for both staff and customers.
During the summer months, Newquay BID funds the Newquay Night Bus, helping people travel safely in and out of town during the night-time economy. This initiative has shown clear reductions in late-night crime.
In addition, Newquay BID runs Shopwatch and Pubwatch radio schemes, including a radio loan scheme that allows new businesses to trial the system before committing. This reflects a strong commitment to joining up businesses across the town to look out not only for themselves, but for each other.
“This is a really exciting project, and we’ll continue to look for additional funding while building on this strong partnership,” Mark Warren concluded. “Together, we are creating a safer Newquay that can be enjoyed by all.”
